02October2026 Introductory training in agroecology: a first step towards the agroecological transition

Condividi

In Tunisia, in the towns of Chbedda and Ouzra, thanks to the MAWARID project funded by Italian development co-operation, 130 farmers took part in a training course on agroecology in collaboration with the CRDA in Ben Arous.

Eight days of training were dedicated to exploring the principles and practices of agroecology in relation to the main agricultural sectors covered by the project: field crops, forage crops and livestock farming, horticulture and arboriculture.

The course enabled farmers to gain a deeper understanding of the relationships between the various components of production systems and to acquire the knowledge and tools needed to identify practices that are more sustainable, resource-efficient and suited to the specific characteristics of their own farms.

The training represents the first step in a broader process of support for the agroecological transition. In the next phase, farmers will receive direct support in their production activities, with technical assistance aimed at the practical application of agroecological practices and their gradual integration into farm systems.

At the same time, the project also includes a train-the-trainer programme for technicians and managers from the agricultural institutions involved, with the aim of strengthening the skills of those working in the sector and promoting the dissemination and continuity of agroecological practices across the region.

Through training, technical guidance and the strengthening of local stakeholders’ skills, MAWARID supports a gradual transition towards more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems, helping to strengthen farmers’ capacity to tackle the challenges linked to resource management and the sustainability of production.”

The MAWARID project – Management of agriculture, water resources and waste for inclusive development – is funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) in Tunis.
